- Heirloom Variety
Produce a tasty herb that compliments poultry and strong flavoured game dishes and is used extensively in stews, sauces and marinades. Thyme grows relatively slowly at first but when established, it grows vigorously! This variety of thyme is relatively low growing at 6-12" in height. A fantastic plant for use in pollinator gardens as the flowers produce very high quality nectar and pollen from which honey bees produce intensely fragrant and flavourful honey. Perennial hardy in Zones 4-9.
How to Grow
Sow seed outdoors in mid to late May, then every two weeks through June, or start them inside and transplant after the danger of frost has passed. Thyme is a low maintenance plant and prolific once established - all you really need to do is provide water when necessary. Thrives in bright, hot sunny gardens. Lightly feed with a general-purpose fertilizer as too much can adversely affect the production of the essential oils responsible for flavour and aroma. Thyme is grown primarily for leaves. Harvest as springs (leaves and branches together).
