Description

This pretty native North American plant is found throughout the southern plains areas in central Canada. Sturdy, drought tolerant colourful plants up to 1 m (3′) tall bloom from mid summer through to early fall. Thrives in hot, humid conditions and is best in medium to drier soils. Flowers are up to 7.5 cm (3″) across with bright yellow reflexed petals and a pronounced dark brown tubular centre.  Flowers are a butterfly favourite and the seed produced by this plant is preferred by many birds and small mammals. Perennial hardy to Zone 4.

How to Grow

Start seed indoors in early March in a soil-less mix. Press the seed into contact and no deeper than 3 mm (1/8″) with the soil-less mix but do not cover as light aids germination. Place the seed in a refrigerator for a 30 days cold treatment before bringing the container back to the warmth. Germinate at 21 C (70 F) then grow on under lights at a slightly cooler temperature. Harden off then seedlings then transplant outside to a sunny spot after the danger of frost has passed. Seed can also be directly sown outdoors in the fall for natural stratification.
