Description

A fascinating new introduction that combines the best of both asparagus and broccoli in one plant. The entire plant is edible from the delicate clusters of sweet broccoli-like florets to the long, tender asparagus-like stems. We suggest harvesting the main stem when the buds begin to form. Side sprouts will then develop allowing harvests to continue for up to five more weeks.

How to Grow

Plants mature quickly and grow best in cooler weather. Both early and late crops are possible. For early crops, start seed indoors in a soil-less mix anytime from mid March to April. Set out the transplants in mid May spacing them about 24" apart in rows 2' apart. Seed can also be directly sown outside in mid May 1/4" deep and 3" apart. Thin or transplant seedlings to 24" apart. Avoid crusting over the soil when directly seeding outdoors as this will greatly reduce the emergence of the seedlings. Fertilizing is essential. Use a balanced granular or 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer. Keep area weeded and evenly watered. When the weather becomes hot, check the plants daily. High temperatures cause the flower buds to open quickly and taste and quality rapidly deteriorates.
