Peruvian Black Mint, also known as Huacatay, is a distinctive Andean herb with a bold, complex aroma that combines notes of mint, cilantro, licorice, and citrus. Despite its common name, it is actually more closely related to marigolds than to mint.
This traditional culinary herb is widely used in Peruvian cooking and can be a great alternative for those who do not enjoy the flavour of cilantro. Its finely divided foliage resembles marigold leaves, while the small flowers are much less noticeable than the plant’s impressive growth.
Plants can reach up to 2 m (6') tall, creating a dramatic vertical accent in herb and vegetable gardens. The roots are also known to help suppress certain persistent perennial weeds.
