Evening Scented Stocks (Matthiola bicornis) (Seeds)
Description
Lilac coloured flowers open at night to emit their wonderful fragrance – it is particularly noticeable on still summer evenings or after a summer shower! Believe us when we say one flower on its own is almost enough to perfume a typical city garden. Flower stalks are more open than the ‘Ten Weeks’ variety. Plants grow to 45 cm (18″) tall in the garden.
How to Grow
This stock is best seeded directly in the garden in mid to late May. Rough up the soil, lightly scatter the seed and barely cover with a slight dusting of soil. Keep the soil moist through the 14 day germination period. Plants can be thinned to 20 cm (8″) apart however they will often perform quite nicely “growing tightly from where they sprout.” Try seeding in a second crop in late June.
